"let your boat of life be light, packed with only
what you need - a homely home and simple pleasures, someone to love and someone to love you,
enough to eat and enough to wear
and a little more than enough to drink:
for thirst is a dangerous thing"

these streets

I am ready for this.  It is nearly 1 o'clock on Wednesday morning (and yes I was in the last 5 to leave the party) but I got home safely and had the most wonderful drive home.  It is much more wonderful driving yourself (in your car with the CD booming) and following Dalene than being driven by Dalene (that I did last week - and to think that, years and years ago, I begged her to pass my driver's licence for me??).  Anyway the 2 ugly sisters are home safely after a lovely evening meeting the full contingent of Scottish Rutherfords and friends that have arrived from America.

This, however is not about wedding stuff or the like.  It is about the song I listened to on repeat all the way home:-

It is on a cd that I bought about 3 years ago and have not really listened to that much.  Tonight however, I replayed it 4 (and a half times) on my route home from Constantia to Claremont.  My children will probably not agree but this is an awesome song.  The lyrics want me to find out more about Glenfield Road in Orchy (and sweet Paolo).  The lyrics (for those of you who want to sing along):-

Cross the border,
Into the big bad world
Where it takes you 'bout an hour
Just to cross the road
Just to stumble across another poor old soul from
The dreary old lanes to the high-street madness
Eye fight with my brain to believe my eyes
And it's harder than you think
To believe this sadness
That creeps up my spine
And haunts me through the night
And life is good and the girls are gorgeous
Suddenly the air smells much greener now
And I'm wondering 'round
With a half pack of cigarettes
Searching for the change that I've lost somehow

These streets have too many names for me
I'm used to Glenfield Road and spending my time down in Orchy
I'll get used to this eventually
I know, I know

Where'd the days go? When all we did was play
And the stress that we were under wasn't stress at all
Just a run and a jump into a harmless fall from
Walking by a high-rise to a landmark square
You see millions of people with millions of cares
And I struggle to the train to make my way home
I look at the people as they sit there alone

Life is good, and the sun is shining
Everybody flirts to their ideal place
And the children all smile as a boat shuffled by them
Trying to pretend that they've got some space

These streets have too many names for me
I'm used to Glenfield Road and spending my time down in Orchy
I'll get used to this eventually
I know, I know

I'm used to Glenfield Road and spending my time down in Orchy

These streets have too many names for me
I'm used to Glenfield Road and spending my time down in our Orchy
I'll get used to this eventually
I know, I know

Quite ironic in a way that I had just spent time with our new Scottish family and was now listening (and listening again) to a song by a Scotsman called Paolo Nutini (he sounds like an Italian black South African fast bowler).  Orchy is apparently a small town close to Paisley in Scotland, the "big bad world" is all about his move to London and the comparisons he found about growing up in a small town and then moving to London.
My favourite verse:-

Where'd the days go? When all we did was play
And the stress that we were under wasn't stress at all
Just a run and a jump into a harmless fall from
Walking by a high-rise to a landmark square
You see millions of people with millions of cares
And I struggle to the train to make my way home
I look at the people as they sit there alone

Nice song, nice verse and an even nicer evening with new friends.  I just have to find out where Paisley is and what sad Paolo is up to at the moment.

For me, it is off to bed.  1.20 and I am having a jolly fine time here on the computer on my own and could go on and on about Glenfield Road and childhoods and stuff like that!! (Matthew has just come through with a bewildered look on his sleepy face asking me where this loud music is coming from).  Thank goodness I don't need beauty sleep like these grumpy menfolk!!  Night night!!

PS.  Still not sure about the outfit!!

  1. Orchy is actually a street in the Foxbar area of Paisley and Glenfield Road is in the Glenburn area of Paisley. I know this because I also come from Paisley. Paolo's Dad has owned and operated the Castelvecchi Cafe in Paisley for around 30 years.
