good times at rusty gate farm

the weekend away was awesome.   in fact i am feeling a bit flat and sad today because it is all over (tired as well, i suppose because i stayed up until close to 1 to watch rory mcillroy win the us open (brilliant)).   little sister had a lovely 50th birthday weekend with her family, a bonus being that matthew caught the bus down from kimberley on friday (a long way for 2 nights but great to have him there).  quite a mission to get him back to the bus stop in worcester yesterday in time - but all ended well and thank goodness the bus was 15 minutes late or he would have missed it by 5 minutes.

too much eating and drinking (we over-ate, over-drank and over-shopped) so had to bring back lots of stuff (rather that than run out, i suppose - after all - "thirst is a dangerous thing").  quite embarrassing all the bottles that we left behind though, but it was a full -4- day celebration.  on thursday night nic and gareth made us pizza's.  nic had bought raw bread dough from coimbra in claremont and they made wonderful thin crisp bases - lovely decorative and imaginative toppings as well (a tad too much chilli on one for some).  here are a couple of pictures:-

kitchen (huge, this was just one half)
pizza
this was where we spent most of our time - tom had a fire burning all day and night.

"the cowshed" had a lovely verandah - with this view:-

on friday matthew, david and lucie arrived and we had set the birthday table on the verandah.  thank goodness for the fire as the weather was very chilly and the big dining hall was a bit big and cold and impersonal.
tom braaied 2 fillets and a sirloin and we made a divine pepper sauce with green peppercorns, brandy and cream, baby potatoes and green beans with garlic butter - mmmmmm.......(sorry i never seem to have my camera on hand when food is served).  we had speeches and tears, nic and kelly sang a song together, kelly did a dance (a born performer):-

Ah home, let me go home
Home is wherever I'm with you.
Oh home, let go me home
this is a cute version of the song

i did video nic and kelly singing it but it needs to be edited and the light is not very good.

we all ended up dancing around the snooker and foozball tables until the early hours (i seem to remember a few tots of tequila as well):-

in between we had walks, old brown sherry, more walks, champagne, magazines, chats, wine, more food - the dam was not too far away and dave, tom and amy were the only ones brave enough to use the foefie slide* (don't you love that word "foefie").  kelly spent time kayaking and caroline was great on the pulley to haul the foefie slide back across the water.  boys had trial runs followed by a swim in the freezing pool and boulle on the lawn

rusty gate farm is between greyton and villiersdorp.  the cottages are lovely.  there was a mountain bike race on in greyton on the weekend and the other cottages were all occupied but we never heard or saw anyone else.

perfect place to celebrate with a very special sister.

foefie slide - a rope or cable with a suspended handle or pulley by means of which one may slide between two points. from Afrikaans meaning "stunt" or "trick" (quite funny my granny always used to ask my brother "did you foefie in your pants?"

that is all from me - take a look at first born son, gareth's take on the weekend

he writes a mean story, i hope i am not going to be in trouble for passing on his blog to my followers - he has been known to use rude words, he has very definite likes and dislikes and pulls no punches - take him or leave him.  i am his mom, and even if i wasn't, i'd take him!!!

getaway long weekend

the family are off to rusty gate farm tomorrow for a long weekend.

youth day tomorrow and dalene's not-so-youthful day on friday.   a friend owns the place and as usual we woke up a bit late.  all the cottages were booked for a mountain bike rally but they have the cowshed available for us.  "Bunkhouse sleeps up to 15 people. Ideal for a large family or wonderful bunch of friends".  sounds just up our street and going to be an interesting and noisey time.  night-time going to be interesting as there are quite a few snorers in the party (i am definitely not one to point fingers).

dalene's older daughter, the gorgeous amy is the organiser of the family.

she made the most incredible invitation for her mother and, if i was not sworn to secrecy and confidentiality, i would put it up on this blog.  very brave of my sister to pose in a leopard skin bikini (where did you get that from?) doing all kind of acrobatic movements - amy took the pictures and put her mother on the foefie slide and climbing boulders on the invite.  she has organised the menus, shopping lists, games to play and washing up rosters.  apparently the cowshed has a masterchef type kitchen so we are having a couple of cookery demonstrations (caroline making her famous cheese bread, nic making pizza dough) and competitions - pizza making on thursday night,  fillets and fancy sauces on friday night for the birthday party and a potjiekos competition on saturday night.

in between this we have games to play.  30 seconds in our family is the most hysterical game ever.  put dalene and i against my three boys and you have an awesome contest.  glad serious 30 second players are not there as dalene and my clues go something like this - clue antony hopkins - "what nicname did we have for a-holes?" - Anthony Hopkins - initials (get it?).  we could not go around calling people a-holes so we used to say "he is such an anthony hopkins".   the boys also have their own code and it is amazing how they get to the correct answers.  we have sequence (great board game), poker, darts and there is a snooker table and foosball (when last i played foosball i was 12 and pretty good at it).

lesley and i had a rehearsal of the birthday speech last night.  lots of laughs and wine and not that easy this morning working out my notes.  she is driving through with us tomorrow so we need some serious practice.

it is going to be a fun time.  the weather is looking pretty grim but i am sure with some old brown sherry and fires burning it won't matter a bit.

i will let you know all about it.  david, the ever busy brother is sure to have laptops and sound systems set up so i may be back sooner than you think with some pictures to share.

take a look here if you want to see more.

my father (who art in heaven)

hallo what's you name?  cyril arthur pay (not really making jokes but that was how gareth used to say "the lords prayer"... "our father who are in heaven, hallo what's your name?")

as this is going to be a bit of a family week with dalene's 50th birthday coming up on friday (a whole long weekend of being with the family - can't wait) i feel like showing you some pictures of my dad and telling you a bit about him.

my dad was born in 1935 and died in 2006.  my mom and dad were divorced when i was 6.  i don't remember things being bad as they were still pretty much good friends (and remained that way until he died).  it was not long after the divorce that my dad moved to port elizabeth. our relationship then became one of spending a week or so of our holidays with him in port elizabeth once or twice a year.
jenny, joan, dalene and cyril - probably 1965

my dad was a "man's man" (*see urban dictionary definition below).  he played cricket and soccer (and golf and bowls).  watched all sports and belonged to all the relevant clubs. he drank castle lager (and lion lager when it was around).

cyril standing in back row next to the suit

after his divorce he dated many woman (but only re-married one).  he was a bit like hugh hefner.  dalene and i were often caught between the girlfriends in port elizabeth (and cape town).  he was engaged once to a much younger woman in pinelands (while he lived and worked in port elizabeth).  she was young and pretty and thought that by bribing dalene and i she would win over my dad and become a wonderful, older-sister-type of stepmother to us.  she took us to ballets and teas and shopping for clothes.  not sure what happened in port elizabeth but a girlfriend who called my father (who art in heaven) "smokey" won that battle.  betty boop became the long term girlfriend but she was not as generous and gushy as the pinelands poppie (and did not have time for children).  i think dalene and i would enjoy betty now because she was a character, very independent, had heaps of crazy girlfriends, took no s**t and gave hugh hefner (my father) a run for his money.

my dad did get re-married later to jenny (single mom with 2 young children).  they then had a son together who is a bit younger than my brother david.   but dalene and i were growing up, getting married ourselves and i was soon to start my own family.  visits to port elizabeth did not happen too often.  my dad also spent all his holidays in port alfred and we did not get to see him much.  he continued living his "man's man" life and golf became his favourite sport.  sadly for him his second marriage also ended and he found himself back in cape town after accepting a job in atlantis.  he lived in melkbosstrand so did not come to town much during the weeks but on the weekends he always made the effort to come and watch the boys play rugby or cricket and have a chat on the sidelines.  he was quick to leave though to meet his mates at the club for a pub lunch.

it must have been hard for him to come back into our lives at this late stage and things were not really the same.  my mom had re-married when dalene and i were 10 and 12 and our stepdad actually became a wonderful father to us.   so grandfather cyril became a distant grandfather and father until he retired and moved from melkbosstrand to live with his sister in cape town.   sadly it was not long after this that he started losing his memory and eventually ended up in a couple of different retirement homes until he died in 2006.  the last years of his life were really awful.  he had dementia but was very confused and restless with it.  previously he was the most laid back placid and gentle man.  as his dementia got worse so did his aggravation with his situation.  we brought him to our homes on sundays for lunch or to visit and he would get extremely agitated to get back home and start pacing.  however, once we got him back to the frail care he would sit and cry and refuse to get out of the car.  it was horrible and sad and after his death both dalene and i had to deal with guilt about the relationship we had with my dad.  dalene being younger than me at the time of my parent's divorce was more badly affected by the divorce than i was.  we both remember sitting for hours waiting for him to come and collect us for "his" weekend, the birthday cards that were always "in the post" and the fact that there was always a young girlfriend at his side when we arrived to spend quality times with him in port elizabeth.  thank goodness that we had each other.

after someone dies you do always think about all the good things and forget the bad (the above things were not bad but did not make for a close relationship).   i have wonderful memories of my dad and i loved him dearly - his love of music - frank sinatra, tom jones and trini lopez (he always had the latest sound system and great record selection), the games we used to play on our long drives from cape town to port elizabeth, he had a throaty chuckle (dalene inherited that) and would laugh until he cried with his whole body shaking.  he was a man that you could not dislike, he had bright blue sparkling eyes, a deep dimple in his chin (dalene got that too) and incredible charm but throughout his life he put his sport and friends before his family and this came back to bite him in the bum at the end.

this is the definition - my bit in (italics)
Who is the Man's Man?
He's the real class act. He's worldly, educated, and a gentleman. He thinks that buttoned shirts are not just for special occasions and that newspapers have more than one section. While he is polite, he is not a pushover. He will swear when he needs to, but will try to control his temper (cyril arthur never swore and was horrified if he ever heard his children or grandchildren swear (or his ex-wife give "the finger"). He can handle his liquor and keeps himself in shape. Most importantly, he will admit his faults and errors, because that is what real men do (not sure about this one). He does not have to be black or white, Republic or Democrat, Atheist or Evangelical; he just does what ever he thinks makes himself a good person that he can be proud of.  A man's man eats meat (and plenty of it), he doesn't get manicures, he shaves when he feels like it, he drinks beer not wine, he absolutely does not know French, he plays dodgeball, he works hard, he is admired for his manliness by other manly men, and most of all, he's very heterosexual. For these reasons, women want him and men want to be him (true about the woman wanting him but i don't think men should want to be like him).

NOTE: A Man's man is highly sought after by women who want to feminize him through marriage usually with negative results (how true).  Cary Grant, Gregory Peck (wasn't he gay? my mother will know), Denzel Washington are all examples of a Man's Man.

so with father's day coming up on sunday it is important to remember our fathers.  i will do, both with love (which we did share) and sadness (for what should have been).

it is sunday after all

i am not usually one to forward inspirational emails and those chain letter type emails.  i sometimes get irritated when i open an attachment and get hit with words which are a whole lot of drivel but with amazing pictures and music.  99 times out of 100 it is stuff you have read before but with different pictures and music and then that 1 time out of 100 it hits you and you think "wow" but you are still not 100% sure about passing it on to your friends.  this week however i came upon the same message 4 times - once on facebook, one email and twice while looking for some pictures on my last posting about the camino de santiago (is someone trying to tell me something?).  i had never read them before and have found myself thinking quite a bit about these simple principles.  so being a sunday (3 in the morning and i cannot sleep) i thought i would share with you:-

“The Four Principles of Spirituality”

The First Principle states:
“Whomsoever you encounter is the right one”

This means that no one comes into our life by chance. Everyone who is around us, anyone with whom we interact, represents something, whether to teach us something or to help us improve a current situation.

The Second Principle states:
“Whatever happened is the only thing that could have happened”

Nothing, absolutely nothing of that which we experienced could have been any other way. Not even in the least important detail. There is no “If only I had done that differently…, then it would have been different…” No. What happened is the only thing that could have taken place and must have taken place for us to learn our lesson in order to move forward. Every single situation in life which we encounter is absolutely perfect, even when it defies our understanding and our ego.

The Third Principle states:
“Each moment in which something begins is the right moment”

Everything begins at exactly the right moment, neither earlier nor later. When we are ready for it, for that something new in our life, it is there, ready to begin.

This is the Fourth Principle, the final one:

“What is over, is over”

It is that simple. When something in our life ends, it helps our evolution. That is why, enriched by the recent experience, it is better to let go and move on.
It is no coincidence that you’re here reading this.
If these words strike a chord, it’s because you understand that not one single snowflake falls accidentally in the wrong place!

Be good to yourself. Love with your whole being. Always be happy.

wise words - no need to say anymore.
(thanks matt for use of thailand pics)
